Nitin Gadkari on Electric Highways: Vigorous government and private efforts are underway to develop the right infrastructure for electric vehicles in India. While automobile companies are focusing on increasing charging facilities along with electric two-wheelers and electric cars at their level, the government is also working towards making electric highways exclusively for electric vehicles by talking to industry leaders. A lot of work has also been done on the pilot project of Electric Highway between Delhi to Agra and Delhi to Jaipur.
Emphasis on the development of indigenous technology
Along with all this, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, while addressing a program of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) this week, said that he is in talks with several companies for the development of economically viable electric highways. He said that sustainable development is the ultimate goal and for this there is a need to develop low cost, pollution-free and indigenous technology in the field of transport. Gadkari had introduced the concept of development of electric highways some time back.
The Union Minister called upon the big companies to come forward to create sustainable business models. He said that I have discussed with Tata and some other parties about making an economically viable electric highway. With the way our cities are developing, we will eventually need to amend the relevant laws related to our city. In a city like Bangalore, people take two hours to reach office. Gadkari said that there is a need to explain to people that things like making hydrogen from water are possible and our talent and knowledge can be used in this work.
