New Toshiba batteries last 20,000 charge cycles

Toshiba is preparing to showcase its new SCiB lithium-ion battery at Asia Sustainable Energy Week 2025, Asia’s largest sustainable energy exhibition. The Japanese manufacturer is betting on the use of a lithium titanate oxide (LTO) combination, which allows it to replenish 80% of its energy in 6 minutes.

In addition to fast charging speeds, the company promises impressive durability – 20,000 cycles. As part of a pilot project, Toshiba has launched a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) service for motorbike taxi drivers in Bangkok. Drivers rent batteries and replace discharged units with fully charged ones.

This approach reduces capital costs and downtime, while the thermal stability of the batteries further minimizes the risk of fire in the region’s hot climate. In addition to motorcycles, SCiB can be used in electric vans, port equipment, and coastal vessels where short charging intervals are critical.

In parallel, Toshiba is collaborating with Airbus UpNext to develop liquid-hydrogen-cooled electric motors for aircraft.
