New Mafia Game Confirmed by Hangar 13, Original Title Will Be Free on Steam This Week

Previous leaks suggested that Mafia 4 will be a prequel.

A new Mafia game – colloquially known as Mafia 4 – has been confirmed by developer Hangar 13. In an interview marking Mafia’s 20th anniversary, general manager Roman Hladik stated that a new project was in development and that it was “a few years away” from the official reveal. As part of the celebrations, publisher 2K Games is giving away the original Mafia title for free on PC. The game can be redeemed on Steam from September 1st to September 5th, after which it’s yours.

Rumors of a new mafia game have been circulating since May, with reports claiming it will be a prequel to the existing trilogy. The plan was to make it in Unreal Engine 5 while dropping the Mafia 3 engine used for recent, unpolished remasters. While the developers haven’t directly confirmed this, Hangar 13’s new interview confirms that a new iteration in the crime sim franchise is in the works. However, Hladik also refrained from calling it “Mafia 4”, which is kind of consistent with the leak.

Mafia studio Hangar 13 has seen numerous layoffs over the past year, with studio head Haden Blackman resigning. While 2K Games confirmed the news, they never provided any context for the dismissal. Reports suggest the massive layoffs were related to several canceled projects, including a new IP codenamed Volt. Parent company Take-Two quietly shut it down last year after already investing US$50 million (about Rs.3.98 million).

The original Mafia game, released in 2002, is set in the 1930’s and follows a cab driver named Tommy Angelo who is reluctantly thrust into the world of organized crime. While initially uncomfortable with joining the Salieri mafia family, the rewards of his actions become too great to ignore – gradually turning him into a crime boss. The game will be available for free on Steam from September 1st to September 5th – otherwise it costs Rs. 365.

Mafia also received a remake in 2020 titled “The Definitive Edition” with overhauled graphics, overhauled game mechanics and better sound design. This version which costs Rs. 2,199 on Steam but is currently at a discount of Rs. 769, not being given away for free.

The Mafia sequels also got a remaster, although the changes didn’t matter much. Mafia 3, Hangar 13’s final crime game, received mixed reviews from critics, citing generic mission designs and technical issues at launch.

Although details on the upcoming Mafia game are sparse, we can expect it to be released on all major platforms – PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.
