RBI Governor Shaktikant Das said it was important to provide digital payment facility for feature phone users. Feature phone users will be able to make payments via SMS without the need for internet connection.

India has a large mobile phone consumer base of around 118 crore users. Most of these users still use feature phones today. According to the report, by July 2021, about 74 crore users had smartphones. Meanwhile, * 99 # service has been launched for all mobile users a few days ago. This feature supports all models of smartphones and feature phones. Also, the phone number needs to be linked to the bank account for payment through UPI.
