Minecraft has become the most popular cyber threat bait game

The company “Kaspersky Lab” in its new report named the most popular computer games among distributors of cyber threats. The data was collected between July 2021 and July 2022. Experts looked at popular games – both for PC and mobile – to find out which of them the attackers were most successful in using to spread malicious files. Experts note that the name of the game was usually used as a bait: the user visited the page in order to download the game itself, mods or cheats for it for free, and as a result, downloaded malicious or unwanted software to their device.

It turned out that Minecraft has become the most popular lure among computer games during this period. It accounted for 25% of all cases of distribution of malicious files under the guise of well-known games. FIFA came in second place with a share of 11%, followed by Roblox (9.5%), Far Cry (9.4%) and Call of Duty (9%). In the mobile games category, Minecraft also took the lead with a 40% share, followed by the GTA series (15%), then PUBG (10%), and finally Roblox (10%) and FIFA (5%). At the same time, experts note that the number of malicious and unwanted files associated with Minecraft decreased by 36% compared to the previous year, and the number of affected users decreased by almost 30% year on year.
