Microsoft chose a type of qubit that its competitors didn’t use. The existence of topological qubits was initially proven in a 2018 Nature publication, then refuted as the researchers withdrew the paper “due to lack of scientific rigor”. However, Microsoft is confident that this type of qubit is the only one to rely on when creating sustainable, scalable quantum computing.
The company noted that they are now guided by developments based on simulations, and not just thinking about ideas in a conference room. Perhaps over time, Microsoft will show something worthwhile.
