Microsoft has unveiled a groundbreaking zero-water cooling system for its data centers, eliminating the need for over 125 million liters of water annually per facility. This innovation is part of the tech giant’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental impact amidst the growing demand for data infrastructure.
Zero-Water Cooling: A Sustainable Breakthrough
The newly introduced cooling design uses a closed-loop system that recycles water, significantly reducing the reliance on fresh water supplies. During construction, an initial amount of liquid is added, which is then continuously circulated to dissipate heat effectively without requiring additional water input.
Microsoft highlighted the system’s benefits in a recent blog post, stating, “By adopting chip-level cooling solutions, we achieve precise temperature control without water evaporation.” While minimal water is still used for administrative purposes, the technology eliminates the need for millions of liters annually for cooling alone.
Enhanced Efficiency and Water Conservation
This new approach enhances efficiency and minimizes wastage. Microsoft’s data centers now boast an average Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) of 0.30 L/kWh, a 39% improvement compared to 2021’s 0.49 L/kWh. This progress stems from expanded operating temperature ranges, reduced water wastage, and continuous operational audits.
Pilot Projects and Future Goals
The zero-water cooling technology will debut in new data centers in Phoenix, Arizona, and Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, by 2026, serving as pilot projects. Microsoft aims to implement these environmentally friendly systems across all new facilities starting in August 2024, with full operational readiness anticipated by late 2027.
