Company Microsoft, it seems, wants to block the ability to install the upcoming update Windows 11 24H2 on computers with older processors.
The point in this case is not about the limitation that Windows formally has starting with 11. As reported, Microsoft wants to make the presence of support instructions POPCNT a mandatory requirement.
This instruction supports quite old CPUs, many of which are not formally suitable for installing Windows 11 at all. But the lack of POPCNT support will probably be a more serious obstacle to installing updates on older PCs.
For example, Intel Core 2 Duo processors do not support precision instruction. Intel first added support to Core i processors of the first generation, and at AMD such support appeared in processors based on the Barcelona architecture.
Eventually, entrepreneurs will find a way to bypass the ban, but for ordinary users this will be an additional obstacle.
