Microsoft has updated its Universal License Terms for Online Services. From now on, cryptocurrency mining is prohibited there without prior permission. This is to protect cloud service customers from power shortages.
The updated terms are effective December 1, 2022. They are automatically applied to new licenses for cloud and online services. And those licenses that have already been purchased will receive an update of the terms after renewal. This applies to all services, including Microsoft Azure.
The company recommends obtaining written permission to mine using Microsoft Online Services, but it is not clear where to send the request, how long it will take, and so on.
In a media comment, the company explained that cryptocurrency mining can lead to failures or deterioration of online services and their users. It can also often be associated with cyber fraud and attempts to gain unauthorized access to customer resources.
It should be noted that now the profitability of mining has fallen sharply, however, many attackers still use this method of “earning money”.
