Microsoft talked about the new proprietary Direct Super Resolution technology. This is not just another AI upscaling algorithm, but a universal interface that will help developers increase gaming performance in a variety of ways. The company will present it at the GDC 2024 conference, but has already shared the first details.
DirectSR is an API for game developers to integrate existing technologies such as NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XESS. In other words, this is a tool with which you can relatively easily “attach” the desired upscaler to the game. The video card manufacturers themselves helped develop it.
“DirectSR is the missing link developers have been waiting for when approaching SR integration, delivering a smoother, more efficient experience that scales across different hardware. This API provides support for multiple vendor SRs through a common set of input and output points, allowing a single path to enable multiple solutions, including NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution and Intel XeSS,” Microsoft says on its website.
The company will reveal technical details about the API at the GDC 2024 conference, which starts on March 18 in San Francisco. According to insiders, DirectSR will be able to provide easy access to all the variables necessary for upscaling: motion vectors, color buffers and other parameters.
