Meta is working on a project to lay its own submarine cable, more than 40,000 kilometers long, which will connect the east and west coasts of the United States across the globe. The company will be the sole owner and user of this cable.
Industry expert Sunil Tagare notes that the initial budget for the project is $2 billion, but as it develops, the cost could rise to $10 billion. Additionally, due to limited resources and their high cost, Meta may lay the cable in segments.
Meta already co-owns 16 existing networks, including the recently completed 2Africa. Google has 33 such projects, some of which it solely owns. Other IT giants, such as Microsoft and Amazon, do not have their own underwater cables, so they either purchase capacity or act as co-owners.
