Raja V, a mechanical engineer turned app developer, has earned the prestigious title of Apple Watch App of the Year 2024 for his innovative app, Lumy. Raja’s journey into app development began with his fascination for iPhone apps, which inspired him to self-learn coding and start creating apps for Apple platforms.
What is Lumy?
Lumy is an app designed to help users align with natural light patterns, offering tools to track sunlight, moon phases, and weather conditions. Raja and his wife, both photography enthusiasts, originally developed Lumy to identify the golden hour for ideal lighting. Over time, Lumy evolved into a global tool for creatives, wellness enthusiasts, and outdoor adventurers.
The app provides customizable Apple Watch complications, enabling users to tailor their experience for various needs, from planning sunset photo shoots to scheduling outdoor activities. Its nature-inspired interface adapts to the time of day, creating a seamless, immersive experience. Integration with Apple Weather enhances its utility for activities like hiking, running, and photography.
Raja’s Development Philosophy
Raja credits his success to the accessibility of Apple’s ecosystem:
“The App Store empowers anyone with ideas to reach a global audience. You don’t need a degree, just a willingness to learn and innovate.”
A Legacy of Excellence
Lumy isn’t Raja’s first milestone. He previously developed Calzy, which won an Apple Design Award in 2018, and Currenzy, a currency converter. Looking ahead, Raja plans to expand Lumy to VisionOS and the Apple Vision Pro, further cementing his status as a leading innovator in the tech world.
