Maruti Suzuki’s first electric car will reportedly not be launched in the affordable segment. Its launch is set for 2025 and also the chairman of MSI (Maruti Suzuki India) himself has indicated that the company’s first electric car will be placed in the upper segment. There have been speculations in media reports for some time that Maruti Suzuki is developing an electric vehicle in India in collaboration with Toyota. Even the specifications of this electric car from the upcoming Maruti Suzuki / Toyota have also been leaked online.
TOI’s accordingRC Bhargava, chairman of Maruti Suzuki India, says that the company’s first EV will be placed in the upper segment of the market. Bhargava informed the shareholders at the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) that “Initially, they will be in the upper echelons of the market. They are not going to hit the low end of the market initially. We expect good customer acceptance for these electric vehicles as they are carefully designed and built.”
The upcoming Maruti electric car will be manufactured at the Suzuki Motor Gujarat plant. The new Maruti EV will have more localization due to the upcoming battery plant. Last week, the foundation stone of Suzuki Motor Gujarat EV Battery Manufacturing Plant was laid in Hansalpur, Gujarat.
Even before this, Bhargava Statement I have said that the company will hit the roads in 2025 with its first electric vehicle. The model will enter production level from 2024-25. Keeping the specifications or the name behind the scenes, Bhargava had told TOI that this first electric car from Maruti Suzuki will cost more than Rs 10 lakh, as EV technology and batteries are expensive. At this price, this car will compete with the Tata Nexon EV. He also told that the company has been testing this new EV for a long time.
