Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Review – How much better is this SUV with the new technology?

Will the new Grand Vitara be able to revive the iconic name or will it save fuel? Is the Grand Vitara the same model as Toyota or has the company done something different to make it different from the Highrider? To get answers to all these questions, we recently ran Grand Vitara in Udaipur and have brought all the answers for you.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Design

Even though the Grand Vitara and the Highrider are similar, manufactured by different companies, Maruti Suzuki has made sure that it is different from the Toyota sibling.

At the front, the LED DRLs and indicators are attached to a strip of chrome and it has a large grille that comes with chrome surround and Suzuki’s badge has been placed on top of it. The LED projector headlight has been given on the front bumper. The faux skid plate has been given at the bottom of the front bumper and a small air intake has been given above it.

The black cladding on the front bumper is visible on the sides and is also visible on the side and faux skid plate element at the rear. The Maruti Grand Vitara gets 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels which look attractive. In its Sigma and Delta versions, the new Grand Vitara gets 17-inch steel wheels with full wheel caps. The large wheel arches on the side and the black color of the sea-pillar make it look like a floating roof.

The split lighting setup at the rear of the Maruti Grand Vitara is given with the LED brake light attached to the Suzuki logo in the middle and the Maruti Grand Vitara begging at the bottom. Vertical lights have been given on both the sides in the rear.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Interior

The Maruti Grand Vitara has been made available in two different interior themes and it depends on which engine option one opts for. The Mild Hybrid engine gets a Black and Bordeaux theme with Silver accents. On the other hand, customers of the Strong Hybrid version get an all black interior with Champagne Gold accents.

The cabin of the Maruti Grand Vitara has been given soft touch material with multi-layer dash which gives it a very premium feel. However, the quality of hard plastic could be a bit better. It gets ventilated front seats, while the Fox leather upholstery looks and feels premium.

The dashboard features a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Its display can also be used for connected car technology which comes with 40+ connected car features which can be controlled from the Suzuki Connect app.

Below the infotainment system is the HVAC system, a 12V socket, USB ports for connectivity and a wireless phone charging tray. Depending on the model selection, it gets a rotary drive mode selector for the all wheel drive model and a button next to the gearbox for the strong hybrid model. Other features options on the Grand Vitara include a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, heads up display and a 360-degree camera for easy parking.

For safety in Maruti Grand Vitara, 6 airbags, ESP, hill hold assist, all wheel disc brakes, hill descent control and TPMS etc. have been given.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Specifications & Sizes

Maruti Grand Vitara has been given two engine options – 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with mild hybrid assistance and 1.5-litre 3-cylinder, strong hybrid engine.

Its 1.5-litre mild hybrid setup is seen in many models of Maruti, including the Brezza. This engine provides 101.6 bhp power and 117 newton meter torque. This engine comes mated to a 6-speed automatic, a 5-speed manual with paddle shifters or a Suzuki All-Grip all-wheel drive system. Its FWD variant gives a mileage of 21.1 kmpl, AWD variant 19.38 kmpl and automatic variant 20.58 kmpl.

Its 1.5-litre petrol engine and strong hybrid system have been taken from Toyota. This engine provides 91.1 bhp and 122 newton meter of torque. Its motor provides power of 79 bhp and torque of 141 newton meter. However, overall it churns out 114 bhp. It is mated to a strong hybrid, ECVT gearbox that sends power to the front wheels. Strong Hybrid Engine gives mileage of 27.97 kmpl.

The Suzuki Grand Vitara is 4345 mm long, 1795 mm wide and 1645 mm high. The Grand Vitara has a 2600 mm long wheelbase and its weight has been kept between 1150 to 1295 kg.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Driving Mileage

Talking about the strong hybrid setup of the Maruti Grand Vitara, which is found in the Toyota Highrider and we got the same experience in it too. There is no sound in the EV mode, but there is a slight delay in the normal and eco modes as the engine wants to use every single stop of petrol. Power mode provides fast response.

Its Battery Regain mode allows for a single pedal but it doesn’t provide as good a driving experience. The CVT gearbox continues to operate from the rear and this works to ensure that one can drive smoothly due to its excellent shifts.

Talking about the K15C engine of its mild hybrid version, it has also been designed keeping in mind the mileage. This means that there is a lack of power in it. Its gearbox shifts very smoothly.

However, if you opt for the Suzuki All-Grip all-wheel drive system with the Maruti Grand Vitara, then the power crunch is not that much. It is not a version of Suzuki’s famous all-wheel drive system and it really takes you into terrain you might not even imagine going.

The all-grip setup has four modes which include Snow, Auto, Lock and Sport. Snow Mode is designed for low-grip surfaces and we tested it by driving on a snowflake. The power is sent to the wheel for maximum grip and it works wonderfully.

Sport mode is given for the driving enthusiasts as in this mode the engine sends more torque to the wheels to get better acceleration. Power is only sent to the rear wheel when it is really needed.

The Auto mode works similar to the two-wheel drive setup wherein power is sent to the wheels when the front wheels have less than expected grip. Lock mode ensures that the all-grip all-drive system is always active and power is evenly distributed between the front and rear axles.

The suspension on the Maruti Grand Vitara has been tuned for a slightly softer side. This means that the ride is comfortable at low speeds, but the experience can be a bit bad if you drive on a slightly rough road at high speeds. Due to the soft setup, there is a little body roll, but even then you can run on the edges at high speed as its chassis slightly reduces the effect of rolling.

The brakes of Maruti Grand Vitara are mixed. The pedal which operates the all disc setup is very easy to operate. The initial bite of these metal plates could have been much better. However, once the brakes act, it accelerates. Regain braking in the Strong Hybrid version improves the stopping power of the model.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is a blend of the company’s typical Maruti car and the magic of Toyota. Though we feel that the company missed a bit in the mild hybrid setup but the all-grip and strong hybrid versions are sure to attract customers with great mileage figures, but it depends on the price.
