Mahindra will not launch hybrid cars like Maruti-Toyota, full focus will be on electric cars

However, the country’s most popular carmaker Maruti Suzuki is taking a bold step in partnering with Toyota Kirloskar to introduce strong hybrid technology for mass SUVs with the new Maruti Grand Vitara. At the same time, like the Grange Vitara, Toyota is also launching its Hyrider in the market.

Meanwhile, Mahindra, the domestic specialist in SUVs, has no plans to tread the self-charging hybrid path with its lineup, instead focusing on fully electric models. The company says that there is no future support for hybrids.

The government is trying out various incentives for electric vehicles (EVs) such as tax exemptions for buyers and financial assistance for select manufacturers. However, the Center has not given any incentive for strong hybrids, which are taxed at the same rate as the combustion engine models.

That’s why car makers like Mahindra are not looking towards the hybrid route and are going straight towards fully electrification. With regard to the strong demand in pre-bookings for the Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid, Mahindra Auto Executive Director Rajesh Jejurikar said that they have “no immediate plans” on a direct rival with similar powertrain technology.

Challenges with EVs

Apart from incentives, EVs are still a costly affair as powertrain components such as batteries and motors are usually imported. There is also the issue of infrastructural challenges such as a limited number of operational public chargers and even less that having to offer DC fast charging.

Mahindra’s upcoming EV

Mahindra has been a part of the EV space for a long time since the introduction of the e2o and e-Verito, which have a range of less than 150 km. It lags behind rivals in the new era of relatively affordable EVs (under Rs 20 lakh), which have a claimed range of over 300 kms.

The carmaker may hit the market with its first long-range EV Mahindra XUV400 compact electric SUV in September 2022 and strengthen its hold. Mahindra is expected to share its detailed plans for the electrified lineup after the reveal of its EV concept on August 15.
