Mahindra & Mahindra recently launched a new electric SUV called the BE 6e. However, they decided to rename it BE 6 after objections from Indigo Airlines’ parent company, InterGlobe Aviation.
What Happened?
On December 3, 2024, InterGlobe Aviation filed a case in the Delhi High Court, claiming that the name “BE 6e” violated their trademark “6E.” Indigo stated that the trademark “6E” has been central to its brand identity for 18 years and is globally recognized. They argued that using “6e” in Mahindra’s SUV could confuse consumers and harm their brand reputation.
Mahindra’s Response
Mahindra explained that their SUV’s name, BE 6e, is entirely different from Indigo’s 6E trademark. They clarified that their SUV is part of the automobile sector, while Indigo operates in aviation, so confusion between the two brands is unlikely. Despite this, Mahindra decided to rename the SUV to BE 6 to avoid further disputes. The legal case will be heard in court on December 9, 2024.
Indigo’s Position
Indigo Airlines stressed that 6E is a registered trademark with significant global recognition. They view any unauthorized use of the term as a violation of their rights and harmful to their brand image. Indigo expressed disappointment over the situation and emphasized that large companies should avoid unnecessary legal conflicts.
