Jio and Airtel’s Fierce Race: Fixed Wireless Internet Gaining Rapid Popularity in Villages and Cities!

A new transformation is underway in India’s internet landscape. The way internet reaches homes is changing. Instead of fiber, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is emerging as the new method. Jio and Airtel are quickly expanding this technology across both rural and urban areas.

Internet users in India are growing rapidly, and along with that, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is becoming increasingly popular. This technology offers broadband at home without the need for fiber cables, delivering internet through 5G signals.

Who is Leading the Market?

Jio and Airtel both offer FWA plans at prices comparable to fiber broadband, so users don’t feel much difference whether the internet is coming via fiber or wireless. Jio holds a dominant 82% market share, while Airtel has 18%. Of the new customers joining, 67% choose Jio, and 33% opt for Airtel.

Internet Revolution in Villages Too

Jio’s JioAirFiber service has reached many villages. Out of Jio’s 6.14 million customers, 45% (about 2.77 million) are from rural areas. In April 2025 alone, Jio added 570,000 new customers, a significant increase compared to March.

Airtel Focused More on Cities

Airtel currently provides FWA mainly in metro cities and large states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat but is working rapidly to expand further.

Network Infrastructure is the Game Changer

Jio’s big advantage is its Stand-Alone 5G network — a fully 5G-based network that enables Jio to roll out its wireless internet services quickly and efficiently.

Both Jio and Airtel offer affordable and beneficial recharge plans, making the service convenient and attractive for their users.
