Japanese GlobalWafers enterprises were forced to suspend the production of silicon wafers as a result of a hacker attack

In early February, it became known that the Taiwanese company GlobalWafers failed to agree on the purchase of the German competitor Siltronic, as a result, the deal to create the second largest manufacturer of silicon wafers in the world did not take place. Now it is reported that the work of GlobalWafers enterprises in Japan was disrupted due to a hacker attack.

According to the website Tom’s Hardware , citing preliminary reports of the incident, the Japanese division of GlobalWafers was forced to suspend the production of silicon wafers from Monday to Thursday. In this country, the company operates four enterprises, but sources do not explain which part of them suspended work as a result of the incident. Taiwanese media reports that the impact of the incident on the activities of GlobalWafers will be minimal.

Another thing is that as a result of the attack, the attackers managed to steal information related to the company’s customers. Now GlobalWafers will have to work with customers who may have been affected by this leak. The company has production sites in Japan, South Korea, China, the USA, Europe and Taiwan, but it is the Japanese that play the main role in the production of 300 mm silicon wafers. Given the scarcity of wafer-based semiconductor components, this incident will exacerbate the problem, albeit to a limited extent.
