It’s mesmerizing: NASA recorded the sounds of Jupiter’s moon

The short audio track was created based on the data collected by the Volny device. This instrument measures the magnetic field around Jupiter to understand how it interacts with gases in the atmosphere. During the flight past Ganymede, the device collected data on electric and magnetic waves, which were then converted into a sound series.

The data was collected during Juno’s closest flyby to Ganymede in June 2021, when it passed 645 miles from the satellite. Covered mostly by water ice, Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system, as well as the only moon with a magnetic field. It is believed that beneath its icy crust lies an underground ocean of salt water.
