IT Minister replied to the Lok Sabha on AI, the government does not have any plan

IT Minister’s Written Reply: According to the Telecom Minister, the government is neither considering bringing any law nor planning to regulate the growth of Artificial Intelligence in the country.

IT Minister’s Written Reply: According to the written submission presented in the Lok Sabha by IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, there are ethical concerns and risks in artificial intelligence. Government agencies have started the process to standardize it. According to the Telecom Minister, the government is neither considering to bring any law nor is it planning to regulate the growth of Artificial Intelligence in the country.

Government uses AI on digital platforms

However, Vaishnav clearly said that at present the government has no plans to regulate AI. According to Vaishnav, NITI Aayog has published several papers on the subject of Responsible AI for all. According to IT Minister Vaishnav, the government is using AI to deliver personalized and interactive citizen-centric services through digital public platforms.

Drawbacks of AI

The minister emphasized that there are a lot of ethical tensions related to AI. Issues such as discrimination, privacy violations, lack of transparency in decision-making with AI and questions arising on responsibility for the damage caused by it are major causes of tension and risk. These issues have been highlighted in the National Strategy. AI (NSAI) was released in June 2018.
