The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said that rules related to data protection are important to ensure that the retail and e-commerce sector is not affected by the data collection and processing activities of large technology companies. Kat said that it is important to ban the data going abroad, so that users’ data is not misused.
Why are e-commerce companies at risk?
The industry body said that uncontrolled processing of personal data by big technology companies is at risk of affecting the retail and e-commerce sector.
In its presentation to the government on the draft Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, the CAIT said that the proposed bill should also make it clear that in case of conflict with sector-specific rules and regulation, the proposed bill will be considered in addition to the sector’s rules and regulations. This will not affect the existing regulatory framework in a negative way.
Let us tell you that Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar had recently said in a conversation with Financial Express that the draft bill does not give any exemption to government entities for data breach. Sensitive personal data of around 30 million IRCTC users was reportedly available for sale on the dark web. The leaked data, which included details such as email, cellphone number, address, age and gender, was posted on a dark web hacker forum for sale at $400 per copy.
Increasing cases of data breach in the country
IRCTC denied that the breached data was retrieved from its servers. Yet it notified CERT-In about the possible leak, as required by the current IT Act. This is not the first instance of an alleged data breach on IRCTC. There were reports of similar data breaches by the organization in 2016 and 2020. In both these cases, sensitive data of passengers was allegedly posted on the dark web for sale.
Apart from this, let us tell that in view of the increasing trend of e-commerce in the country, small traders were demanding for a long time to allow non-registered traders in GST to do business on online platforms. The GST Council had given in-principle approval on this in its last meeting.
