Is Everest the tallest mountain in the world?

Researchers have measured Mount Everest many times over the past few decades. According to the latest estimate, announced in November 2021, Chomolungma is 8,848.86 meters above sea level. The question arises: why do we use the concept “above sea level” when determining the highest mountain in the world? However, sea levels differ in different parts of the world, and they change due to climate change. Therefore, today, altitude is measured relative to the mathematically determined geoid of the Earth.

But what if measurements were taken simply from bottom to top? Then the title of the highest mountain would go to Mauna Kea, an inactive volcano in Hawaii. Although its peak is 4,205 meters above sea level, most of Mauna Kea is hidden under water. When measured from base to peak, Mauna Kea is 10,211 meters high.

Another leader is Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador. Its top is the farthest point from the center of the Earth.
