Is electricity going to be expensive? Preparation to pass on the burden of high cost of imported coal to the customers

Power Tariff Hike: Amid growing apprehensions of deepening power crisis due to domestic coal shortage, the power ministry has backed the idea of passing on the burden of high-priced imported coal to consumers. This means that there is a possibility of electricity becoming more expensive in the coming time. There is a shortage of coal in the country for some time now.

The Union Electricity Secretary said this thing
Union Power Secretary Alok Kumar said that it has been agreed to pass on the high cost of imported coal to consumers for some coal-based power plants by December 2022. He said that if the imported coal-based power plants do not run at full capacity, the domestic coal-based units will be under pressure due to the increasing demand for electricity.

Electricity availability expected to increase
The move will help in increasing the availability of power as imported coal based units like Adani Group, Tata Power and Essar will be able to generate power and sell it to state distribution companies.

Energy Minister took the meeting
Earlier this month, a high-level meeting chaired by Power Minister RK Singh included units like Essar’s 1,200 MW Salaya plant and Adani’s 1,980 MW plant in Mundra to pass on the high cost of imported coal to consumers.
