At the Morgan Stanley technology conference , Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger returned to discussing the issues raised at a recent investor event. Particular attention was paid to interaction with the company’s customers in the contract business, and the head of Intel found it possible to state that they are interested not only in the most advanced Intel 18A process technology, but also in the previous Intel 3.
Let’s add that until now, in the context of the release of third-party products by Intel on advanced lithography, the Intel 18A process technology, which will be mastered by the middle of the decade, appeared mainly. It is expected that with its help the company will produce some components for customers from the US defense industry at enterprises in the state of Ohio, which will be built by then.
Before that, the intentions of the American company Qualcomm to entrust Intel with the production of certain components based on Intel 20A technology, which will be mastered by 2024, were also mentioned. Amazon’s AWS division was also supposed to be Intel’s client, although in this case it would have come down to the packaging of chips produced by other companies. Recently, Intel management also did not hesitate to admit that enterprises in Ireland are increasing the production of certain automotive components using the Intel 16 process technology.
This week, Patrick Gelsinger said, “We have contract customers testing Intel 3 and 18A processes every day . ” In other words, before the company launches products for customers using Intel 18A technology in 2025, it may have customers using the Intel process 3. As the company CEO explained, two different teams of Intel specialists are engaged in the development of different processes. One focuses on Intel 3 and 4 technologies, and the second focuses on Intel 20A and 18A. Since the work is carried out in parallel, this contributes to the goal of mastering five new technological processes in four years.
The recent acquisition of Israeli company Tower Semiconductor, according to Gelsinger, will allow Intel to add experience in working with clients. After the deal, Intel will already have at least a hundred customers who have worked with Tower. The Israeli team of specialists will receive the financial and technological capabilities of Intel, and this symbiosis has an excellent synergistic potential. Around 5,000 Tower employees will join the Intel team.
