Indian Railways implements real-time train information system to track train movement time

Indian Railways is setting up a Real-time Train Information System (RTIS), built in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Indian Railways has installed Real Time Train Information System devices in 2700 train locomotives, the Railway Ministry said in a statement on Friday. RTIS is a technology that provides data related to the running status of trains.

“The Real Time Train Information System (RTIS) developed in collaboration with ISRO will be installed on locomotives for automatic acquisition of train movement timings at stations.
The satellite feed from the currently installed device reaches the Control Office application, which provides real-time information on trains. In the second phase of roll out, 6,000 more locomotives will be covered in 50 loco sheds using ISRO’s SATCOM hub.

The control speed of trains can be monitored more easily through RTIS technology. There is no need to keep a person under observation for this. With the help of this technology, apart from giving real time information to the passengers, the reservation chart of trains is prepared automatically. At the same time, the ministry said that RTIS will give mid-section updates with a duration of 30 seconds.

At present, the GPS feed from around 6,500 locomotives (RTIS and REMMLOT) is being fed directly to the Control Office Application (COA), the ministry said. This includes automatic charting of trains through COA and NTES and real-time intimation to passengers.”

Meanwhile, the newly launched chatbot of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) is getting remarkable response from train passengers during its beta launch as more than 1 billion people have used it, a senior IRCTC official said. .

Speaking to ANI, the official said that the railways is offering the new facility to the customers to book tickets, which will enable them to interact with the system through voice, chat and click-based systems. Additionally, the system does not require any password and is based on One Time Password (OTP).
