In the last 5 years, more than 600 social media accounts of the central government were hacked!

Over 600 social media accounts of the central government have been hacked in the last five years, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur told the Lok Sabha. Responding to a question related to the hacking of the government’s Twitter handle and email accounts, he said 641 accounts have been hacked since 2017.

On this, while counting the cases of hacking year after year, he said in a written reply that 175 accounts were hacked in 2017, 114 accounts were hacked in 2018, 61 accounts were hacked in 2019, 77 in 2020, 186 in 2021 and In the current year, 28 government accounts have been hacked.

Thakur said that this information has been made available by the Indian Computer Emergency Team (CERT-In) to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

When asked about the steps the government is taking to prevent such incidents in the coming times, he said that CERT-In was created to enhance cyber security. In order to ensure safe use of digital technology, CERT-In constantly issues alerts and advisories on the latest cyber threats and measures to combat them.

“The Indian Computer Emergency Team has issued 68 advisories to organizations and users to protect data and reduce fraud.

The Minister said, “In case of threats to websites/e-mails/Twitter accounts, CERT-in immediately recommends such action to avoid cyber attacks. CERT-in affected organizations, service providers, regional computer security response teams.” As well as keeps in touch with law enforcement agencies.

Security advisories have also been published for users to keep their desktop, mobile/smart phones safe and prevent phishing attacks, he added.

“CERT-In has created the National Cyber ​​Coordination Center (NCCC) to create awareness about the present situation as per the need of awareness of potential cyber security threats. Phase-I of NCCC is currently operational. ” The minister said.
