The program was created by scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences at the request of the Shanghai Prosecutor’s Office. The neural network was trained on 17 thousand cases, which were considered from 2015 to 2020. The model can now handle eight types of crime: stealing money from bank cards, illegal gambling, dangerous driving, willful injury, theft, fraud, obstruction of official duties, and “provoking trouble.” The latter is often used to persecute dissidents.
They plan to retrain the model so that it can recognize less common accusations. The goal of the project is to free human prosecutors from routine so that they can deal with more complex cases.
