IIT Guwahati: Researchers develop unique technology beneficial for electric vehicles

This research is expected to lead to better and more effective drivetrains based on different regions.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati have developed a first-of-its-kind technology that categorises the motor and battery of electric vehicles in India. This technology promotes the finest drivetrain equipment for these vehicles in Indian conditions. A drivetrain is a group of devices that power the wheels of a vehicle.

According to Praveen Kumar, a professor in the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering at IIT Guwahati, the electronic drivetrain developed for wet terrain (the group of components that power the wheels) does not work in dry and cold environments. Therefore, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are now considering making standard drive cycles for Indian conditions.

He said that no OEM currently uses this technology. This research is expected to lead to better and more effective drivetrains based on different regions. Researchers at the Electric Mobility Laboratory (EVL) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati focused on Indian weather conditions in rural as well as urban areas. The ‘drive-cycle’ developed by the IIT-Guwahati team is unique and not available anywhere, the researchers claimed.
