IBM To Release Quantum Processor With Better Performance Than Today’s PCs

The chip was named Eagle. It has 127 qubits (a qubit is the smallest unit of information in a quantum computer, analogous to a bit in a conventional computer). Qubits can act both as one and as zero at the same time. Because of this, quantum computers may one day become much faster than their classical counterparts. But they are extremely difficult to build – they require huge cryogenic refrigerators to work.

The Eagle chip is the first to have over 100 qubits. IBM said it plans to release the 433-qubit Osprey processor in 2022, as well as the 1121-qubit Condor chip. This will enable a breakthrough in quantum computing.
