The controversy over Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Chairman SN Subramanian’s statement of ‘working 90 hours a week’ is not stopping. Subramanian had recently given this advice in an online conversation with his employees. He had said that if possible, the company would make you work on Sunday also.
After this statement of Subramanian, there was anger on social media. Meanwhile, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra further heated up the issue by giving his opinion on it. He talked about giving priority to the quality of work and said that instead of emphasizing on hours, the focus should be on output.
‘Output matters more than hours’
In a program, Anand Mahindra said that this debate is going in the wrong direction. It should not be counting on hours but on the output of work. Whether it’s 40 hours or 90 hours, the question is, what output are you producing? If you are not spending time at home with family or friends, reading or having time to think, then how will you take good decisions? He further said that a balanced life is necessary for a good life and taking right decisions. You can’t stay in the same tunnel all the time.
‘My wife is very nice, it’s nice to look at her’
On questions about his activism on social media, Mahindra said that I am often asked how much time I spend on social media. I want people to know that I’m not on X (formerly Twitter) or social media because I’m alone. My wife is nice, I like looking at her. I am not here to make friends, but to use social media as a business tool.
Subramanian’s statement sparked debate
Earlier, L&T Chairman Subramanian had said in his statement that what will you do sitting at home on Sunday? How long will you stare at your wife? How long will wives look at their husbands? Go to office and start working. Many people had expressed their displeasure over his statement.
Mahindra’s statement goes viral
Anand Mahindra gave a new direction to this debate by saying that the quality of work matters more than its quantity. His statement is becoming increasingly viral on social media and people are appreciating it a lot.
