India’s Unified Payment Interface or UPI service was launched in Sri Lanka and Mauritius on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth also participated in this online program. The launch of Indian services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius comes against the backdrop of India’s growing bilateral economic ties with both the countries.

With this, UPI service will be available to Indian citizens traveling to Sri Lanka and Mauritius as well as citizens of these countries traveling to India. How will UPI service work abroad?

To make UPI payments in Mauritius and Sri Lanka, individuals need to register their bank account with a UPI-enabled mobile application. Once the bank account is linked, users will be asked to specify the transfer amount and currency as well as provide recipient details such as their bank account number, IBAN and BIC.

How to make UPI payment in Mauritius and Sri Lanka?

  1. Open the UPI app and go to the home screen. Tap your profile picture. In the Payment Settings section, select UPI International.
  2. Tap Activate next to the bank account you want to use for international UPI payments.
  3. Enter your UPI PIN to confirm activation. Once you have activated your international payment, scan the QR code provided by the merchant.
  4. Enter the amount you want to pay. Payable amount will be shown in both local currency and Indian Rupees.
  5. Tap “Make Payment”. Enter your UPI PIN to complete the transaction. Your payment will be completed.
