How TikTok “caused a pandemic” of a nervous tic

Since March 2020, specialists from the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom have noticed a sharp increase in the number of young patients seeking treatment for nervous tics. Doctors say that most young people have watched content from TikTok bloggers who claim to have Tourette’s syndrome.

Some researchers have said that the sudden spike in tick disorders could be called “a pandemic within a pandemic,” and social isolation and other consequences of quarantine are to blame. Such experts believe that TikTok is not to blame.

Experts say mental disorders do not spread in the same way as measles, for example. Their symptoms may not be uniform. And the spread of tic disorders can speak generally about how people express their stress. TikTok may have an indirect relationship to this.
