How the human brain is significantly different from the brain of other mammals



The fact is that the impulses of neurons in the brain are produced by special proteins. The task of these proteins is to control the flow of ions, due to which these substances are called ion channels. Neuroscientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have come to an unexpected conclusion: the number of such ion channels in neurons in humans is less than in other mammals.

Prior to this discovery, researchers were confident that all mammalian species had the same ion channel density. However, Harnett and Beaulieu-Laroche, thanks to a new study comparing neurons in humans, macaques, rabbits, marmosets, ferrets, rats, guinea pigs, gerbils, mice, Etruscan shrews. It turned out that in everyone except humans, with an increase in the size of neurons, the density of ion channels increased.
