Alexander Butenko, head of the department at the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Russian Ministry of Health, listed two scenarios for the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Butenko notes that the infection has a high ability to mutate, but this does not always lead to the pathogenicity of the virus, it happens that the mutation also leads to a weakening of the virus, which leads to a completely opposite result – a decrease in this very pathogenicity.
Science knows cases of deprivation of the properties of the pathogenicity of the virus as a result of mutations. It is possible that COVID-19 will follow the same scenario … Nevertheless, it cannot yet be argued that Omicron belongs to such … variants of the virus
In addition, there is a possibility that the virus will have no place to live.
Most people tolerate it mildly. Thus, herd immunity is developed … If the virus does not have room for reproduction and mutations, it will come to naught.
But everything will depend on the immune layer of the population and the mutagenicity of the virus, the expert notes.
