How speed differs in games on computers with DDR4 and DDR5 memory

Random Benchmark has tested three PC builds on Windows 10 and 11 in 16 modern gaming projects. One of them included an AMD Ryzen 5 5600x processor, the remaining two were based on an Intel Core i5 12600k. At the same time, the Core i5 12600k was installed with DDR4 and DDR5 memory. Games launched during the tests include Forza Horizon 5, Age of Empires IV, Call of Duty Warzone, CSGO, Cyberpunk 2077, Days Gone, Death Stranding, F1 2021, Far Cry 6, Fortnite DX11, Fortnite Performance, Horizon Zero Dawn, Microsoft Flight Simulator, PUBG Battlegrounds, Red Dead Redemption 2, Shadow of The Tomb Raider, Watch Dogs Legion.

V Forza Horizon 5 On Windows 10, the best results were shown by the Core i5 12600k with DDR4: 177 fps on average and 132 fps in rare events. The values are slightly worse for the same processor, but with DDR5: 174 fps on average and 129 fps in rare events. As for the configuration with Ryzen 5 5600x, frame drops in rare events on it were more noticeable (114 fps), but in terms of average speed (165 fps) it did not differ much from competitors based on Intel.

If we talk about Windows 11, then the Core i5 12600k values practically did not change (177 fps (DDR4), 175 fps (DDR5) on average and 132 fps (DDR4), 128 fps (DDR5) in rare events), just like the Ryzen 5 5600x (166 fps on average and 118 fps in rare events).

Age of Empires IV went best on Core i5 12600k with DDR4 on both Windows 10 and Windows 11: 143 fps on average, 115 fps in rare events and 143 fps on average, 124 fps in rare events, respectively … At the same time, the difference between DDR5 and DDR4 was about 10 fps: 130 fps on average, 108 fps in rare events (Windows 10) and 131 fps on average, 116 fps in rare events ( Windows 11).

But in Call of Duty Warzone the difference between DDR4 and DD5 was already more than 10 fps. As before, the leader was the Core i5 12600k processor with DDR4: it demonstrated 173 fps on average, 102 fps in rare events (Windows 10) and 175 fps on average, 109 fps in rare events ( Windows 11). The Core i5 12600k with DDR5 had 160 fps and 164 fps on average, 86 fps and 89 fps in very rare events on Windows 10 and 11, respectively. The Ryzen 5 5600x has the lowest frame rate: 151 fps and 158 fps on average, 97 fps and 101 fps in rare events (Windows 10 and Windows 11).

V CSGO on Windows 11, the Ryzen 5 5600x is already leading the way with an average frame rate of 325 fps, as well as 219 fps in rare events. On Windows 11, this build came in second after Core i5 12600k (DDR4): 326 fps on average, 216 fps in rare events. The difference between the two memory options here is 22 fps (Windows 10, DDR4 – 333 fps on average, DDR5 – 311 fps) and 8 fps (Windows 11, DDR4 – 311 fps on average, DDR5 – 303 fps).

WITH Cyberpunk 2077 again, the assembly with the Core i5 12600k (DDR4) does better. True, on Windows 10 and 11, the average number of frames was the same – 124 fps, while for Core i5 12600k (DDR5) it was at first 122 fps, and with the transition to Windows 11 – 124 fps … In rare events, the difference was also only 2-3 fps: 96 fps and 93 fps (Windows 10), 95 fps and 97 fps (Windows 11). In Ryzen, on average, when switching from 10th to 11th version of Windows, the value changed by 1 fps: from 117 to 118, and in rare events – by 2 fps: from 86 to 88 fps.

Days Gone also goes better with DDR4: the average performance in this case is 167 fps and 165 fps, in rare events – 109 fps and 104 fps (Windows 10 and Windows 11). As for DDR5, it lags by 10-12 fps on average from DDR4: 155 fps (Windows 10 and 11) – average value, 97 and 99 fps (Windows 10 and 11) – in rare events. Ryzen achieves the following results on Windows 10 and 11: 154 fps on average and 86 fps on rare events.

V Death Stranding the best performance values are shown by the assembly with AMD: 188 fps and 192 fps on average, 149 fps and 153 fps in rare events (Windows 10 and Windows 11). Here the difference between DDR4 and DD5 is in favor of DD5 – around 10-11 frames on average: 172 fps versus 162 fps (Windows 10, average values), 173 fps versus 162 fps (Windows 11, average values). Same with F1 2021: Ryzen comes first. But then there are DDR4 and DDR5 and the values with DDR4 are higher: 304 fps on average versus 296 fps on Windows 10 and 302 fps versus 296 fps on average on Windows 11.

DDR4 continues to lead in Far Cry 6 with an average performance of 149 fps and 155 fps versus 138 fps and 145 fps (DD4 and DD5 on Windows 10 and 11). At Ryzen, the frame rate averaged on both operating systems in the region of 137-138 fps.
