National Flag Code 2022: Dos and don’ts related to hoisting of Tricolour

With the recent amendment into the Flag Code of India, the government has allowed the flag to be flown even in night. Earlier, the Nation Flag had to be taken down every evening and hoisted back every morning.

According to the Flag Code of India, “a member of the public, private organisation, or educational institute is allowed to hoist the National Flag on all days and occasions, ceremonial or otherwise, consistent with the dignity and honour of the flag.”

The Flag Code of India also says that the National Flag should be of any size but always rectangular, with the length-to-height ratio fixed at 3:2.

The code further states that the position of the National Flag has to be distinct and honourable. Also, a damaged or untidy flag must never be displayed.

Subsequently, Flag Code envisions the provisions in which you cannot use the flag and says that the Tricolour cannot be used for commercial purposes.

Going further, the flag cannot be dipped in salute to any person or thing or as a festoon, or for any kind of decoration purposes, says the Flag Code.

It should be noted that according to Article 51A (a) of Indian constitution, it shall be the duty of every citizen of India to abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem.

That being said, while there were various types of Indian National Flags before the Independence – the Constituent Assembly held on 22nd July 1947 adopted the present flag as the National Flag of India.
