Government will give Rs 62,000 crore 5G spectrum to BSNL, users will get strong service

highlights

BSNL will get 5G spectrum worth Rs 62,000 crore.
Government can allot 700 Mhz band to BSNL.
At present, the 700 MHz band is only with Jio.

New Delhi. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will get 5G spectrum worth Rs 62,000 crore from the Department of Telecom (DoT). This will be in addition to the Rs 1.64 lakh crore relief package announced by the government earlier this year. Apart from this, the government is also planning to allot airwaves in 700 MHz and 3.3 GHz to BSNL. BSNL will become the second telecom operator in India to offer 5G services through the 700 MHz band. Earlier, the 700 MHz band was only with Jio.

According to media reports, BSNL will get around Rs 40,000 crore for 10 MHz in 700 MHz band and around Rs 22,000 crore for 70 MHz in 3.60-3.67 GHz band. BSNL will be able to provide good 5G services with this spectrum allocation. Significantly, the sub-GHz band will specifically help telcos to offer 5G services in rural areas.

Let us tell you that BSNL is soon going to start 4G services in India with the help of a consortium led by Tata Consultancy Services, which includes Tejas Network and Center for Development of Telematics.

DoT approval
According to the report, a government official in the matter said that the committee of the Department of Telecom has approved the proposal to give 10 MHz in the 700 MHz band and 70 MHz in the 3.60-3.67 GHz band to BSNL. Apart from this, the discussion is also that it will be taken forward.

airtel will not buy 700 mhz spectrum in future
Significantly, the government will have enough spectrum in the 700 MHz band to give to BSNL, as Bharti Airtel has said that it will not get 700 MHz spectrum in future auctions as well. However, a report by IIFL Securities states that the low-frequency band is not absolutely necessary for 5G SA, but it will provide a competitive edge.

BSNL’s 5G service will be available next year
Experts believe that 10 MHz of spectrum in the 700 MHz band is suitable for Airtel as it will be crucial for providing 5G in rural areas. Reliance Jio spent Rs 39,270 crore to acquire 10 MHz of spectrum in the 700 MHz band across the country. BSNL’s 5G is expected to be launched in August 2023.
