Google I/O 2024: From ‘Ask Photos’ to ‘AI Overviews’, these are the flagship Gemini-powered features

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Gemini 1.5 Pro will have a 2 million token context window (the amount of information an AI model can understand), double the 1 million tokens currently processed.

Google introduced Gemini 1.5 Pro during its IO event on Tuesday. The company had launched the Google Pixel 8a a few days before the event and focused its I/O on the Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) model. Starting the event with the flagship Gemini AI model, Google revealed that the upgraded model is more intelligent and accurate than before. The company also mentioned that currently, more than 1.5 million developers use the Gemini 1.5 version. Additionally, it has been reported that over 1 million users have shown interest in using Gemini on mobile in the past three months.

Google’s newly upgraded Gemini AI model is now better than ever. Search has also improved with the AI model, and Google has integrated it into its native app suite. According to Google, the new Gemini AI will now make it easier to find photos in Google Photos. Users can now search photos in the Google Photos app based on the conditions at the time they were taken. This feature is called “Ask Photos.” With this smart search feature, users can ask complete queries instead of using keywords, such as “What is my license plate number?” The app will then analyze the location and previous photos to find the right car. It can also tap into deeper memories, such as showing a child’s swimming progress over time.

Google has also endeavored to enhance Workspace with Gemini. With Gemini 1.5 Pro, users can access a wealth of information related to Gmail with just one search. Additionally, Gemini has made Google Meet smarter. If you’re unable to attend a lengthy meeting on Google Meet, you can later ask Gemini for highlights of that meeting.

The power of Google Gemini has also been integrated into Google Search. ‘AI Overviews’ provides users with a summary of search results at the top of the AI search page. Its purpose is to offer concise answers to complex questions, which can save users time searching through multiple websites. This feature is being rolled out to all users in the US this week.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Gemini 1.5 Pro will have a 2 million token context window (the amount of information an AI model can understand), double the 1 million tokens currently processed. This will enable Gemini to engage in much longer conversations, such as discussing an entire book with Gemini. This capability allows Gemini to retain a significant amount of information before answering users’ questions.

Also revealed during Google IO was AlphaFold 3, a brand new AI tool launched by Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs. Unlike the previous version, which only focused on proteins, the new version can also utilize generic AI capabilities to predict the appearance of DNA and RNA molecules when scientists inquire. Its aim is to streamline and expedite the drug discovery process.
