“Google has eliminated signs of an antitrust violation.” Google is no longer forcing app developers from Russia to pay via Google Pay

The Federal Antimonopoly Service said that Google has removed restrictions on making payments for app developers from Russia. Previously, the ability to pay for downloading paid applications, as well as for access to functions and services (for example, paying for a subscription), was provided only through the internal payment system of Google Play. Otherwise, the company would not allow the application into its catalog. Developers in Russia can now use alternative payment methods.

After analyzing the company’s actions, the service found that Google had eliminated signs of an antitrust violation.,” the FAS said.

Recall that in July 2022, the agency found that Google LLC, which owns and operates the Google Play app store, obliged developers distributing paid apps through the platform to use the Google payment system exclusively.

The company’s actions contained signs of abuse of dominance, in connection with which the FAS issued a warning to the company. In August, Google announced that it made changes to the Google Play Developer Program Policies and removed the ban on the use of third-party payment systems.
