Android users are worried: Google to take more control over Gemini on phones! Major change from July 7
Google’s AI assistant Gemini provides special features to Android smartphone users. Now, Google is making a major change in how its Gemini AI assistant works with Android smartphones. Starting July 7, Gemini will be able to interact more with apps like Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and other utility apps—even if the Gemini App Activity setting is turned off. However, this update has raised several questions among users about privacy and data control. Here’s what you need to know.
What will be the impact on Android users?
As per a report by Android Authority, Google has clarified what the Gemini update coming on July 7 means for Android users. The company responded to an email query from Android Authority, confirming that Gemini will soon be able to help with daily tasks like sending messages, making phone calls, and setting timers—even if Gemini App Activity is turned off.
Confusion over Google’s email
There was initial confusion when Google sent an email to users saying that Gemini will soon help you use Messages, WhatsApp, and utility apps on your phone, whether the Gemini App Activity setting is on or off. This lack of clarity raised concerns: will the AI get access to private data or system functions even when activity tracking is disabled?
The update is good for users
This update could benefit users, as they’ll be able to use Gemini to perform tasks such as sending messages, making calls, and setting timers—even when Gemini App Activity is off. Also, when the activity setting is turned off, Gemini chats are not reviewed or used to improve AI models. Users can disable Gemini’s app connection at any time by visiting: https://gemini.google.com/apps.
Gemini will work even when it is turned off
Starting July 7, Gemini will act as a personal assistant even if the App Activity setting is disabled. Currently, if Gemini App Activity is off, apps like Phone, WhatsApp, and Messages are also disconnected. With the new update, users can keep Gemini App Activity off and still use Gemini with apps like Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp.
If you want more control over your data, here’s how to manage Gemini:
Turn off Gemini App Activity:
You can turn off Gemini App Activity by going to the Gemini app. Tap on your profile, then go to Gemini App Activity and toggle it off. Alternatively, you can go directly to the settings page via the Gemini website. Note: your chats are saved in your account for 72 hours, whether Gemini App Activity is on or off.
Restrict Gemini’s access to core apps:
With the new update, Gemini will have access to apps like WhatsApp and Messages to function fully. In its initial email, Google did not explain how to disable this integration, but you can manage it through the Gemini app. Go to your profile, then to Apps, where you can revoke permissions for Phone, WhatsApp, and Messages. However, turning off these permissions will prevent Gemini from making calls or sending messages.
