Yesterday we saw comparison of desktop GeForce RTX 4090 with mobileand today let’s see how different the mobile RTX 4090 Laptop and RTX 4080 Laptop are.
For analysis, the authors of the ComputerBase resource took MSI Titan GT77HX V13 and XMG Neo 16 E23 laptops. The first is equipped with an RTX 4090 and Core i9-13950HX, the second offers an RTX 4080 and Core i7-13700HX.
As you can see, in the case of maximum power limits of 150W, the cards are very close. The difference is only about 10%. And for any other power values, if they are the same for two adapters, the performance will differ slightly, which is a reason to think about the advisability of overpaying.

You can also see that the RTX 4090 Laptop at 120W will be slower than the RTX 4080 Laptop at 150W. At the same time, the minimum figure for the RTX 4090 Laptop is 80 watts. At this setting, the card is almost 30% slower than its maximum and slower than the RTX 4080 Laptop rated at 100W or higher. And the RTX 4080 Laptop, with its minimum of 60 W, is generally almost half as weak as the top-end RTX 4090 Laptop. As before, when choosing a gaming laptop, the TGP value for graphics cards is probably the most important value.
The authors also gave an overall performance rating for Nvidia mobile new products and many other desktop adapters. As you can see, the RTX 4090 Laptop at the maximum power limit roughly matches the desktop RTX 3090 and Radeon RX 6900 XTXH, lagging behind the RTX 4070 Ti by only 5%. That is, the mobile RTX 4090 Laptop at its maximum is approximately the desktop RTX 4070 Ti, when compared within the new generation. The desktop RTX 4080, despite identical parameters, is 24% faster than the mobile RTX 4090 Laptop.

The mobile RTX 4080 Laptop at its maximum is an analogue of the desktop RTX 3080. The desktop RTX 4070 Ti, which is very similar in characteristics, is 17% faster. By analogy, we can assume that the desktop RTX 4070 will roughly correspond to the mobile RTX 4080 Laptop, that is, the desktop RTX 3080.
If you evaluate the RTX 4080 Laptop with a minimum power limit, then this is just the level of the desktop RTX 3060 Ti.
Recall that the RTX 4090 Laptop is based on the AD103 GPU with 9728 CUDA cores and is equipped with 16 GB of memory with a 256-bit bus. The main parameters here are identical to the desktop RTX 4080. As for the mobile RTX 4080 Laptop, it is based on the AD104 GPU with 7424 CUDA cores, and the card also has 12 GB of memory with a 192-bit bus. In this case, the parameters are almost identical to the desktop RTX 4070 Ti.
