Petra startup has come up with a new way of digging tunnels. A very hot gas should be used instead of punching through the rock.
The company has already tested the technology at an industrial park in California. The stones were heated to temperatures above 5537 degrees Celsius. Since then, Petra has decided to use a slightly different method: it blasts rock formations at a temperature of about a thousand degrees Celsius, using gas and heat. The company has patented a special blend, but keeps the composition a secret.
The startup intends to change the underground communications industry. The company said using hot gas from Petra could cut pipeline trenching costs by 50-80%. The startup is currently investigating whether this method works with different types of stone, including limestone or granite.
