The CEO of Mazda’s North American office revealed the company’s plans to enter a more premium market, and also said that not everyone needs electric cars with a huge range.
Recall that Mazda’s only electric car at the moment, the MX-30, has a range of only 160 km. In an interview with Automotive News, Tom Donnelly stated that not everyone needs a large range. He stated that “for many, a range of 160 to 400 km is exactly what they need.”
The new CEO of Mazda North American Operations, explained that the Japanese automaker will use a two-stage approach.
The first stage of the plan involves the release of crossovers CX-90 and CX-70. Crossover CX-90 already presented, it offers modern interiors, premium looks and hybrid technology at a price significantly lower than the Germans. The CX-70 should be a more affordable two-row version.
“The CX-90 is the most premium vehicle we have ever introduced to the US market,” Donnelly said. “The exterior design, the technology in the car, the powertrains that come with the CX-90 really represent new territory for Mazda and a massive improvement on how the brand was known before.”
The second phase of the plan involves the development of a model range that will be fully electrified by 2030. Specifically, by the end of the decade, every model in Mazda’s lineup will have at least one all-electric version.
