Shortly after the announcement of the new Apple monitor , its first reviews began to appear on the network. As it turned out, not all journalists who have worked with the display for $1599 are ready to rate it highly, despite its good technical characteristics.
When studying the specifications of the Apple Studio Display, it turned out that the 27-inch matrix with 5K resolution was inherited from the 2020 iMac. Although it’s slightly brighter (up to 600 nits), it doesn’t have local dimming, and it doesn’t support displaying HDR content, and black images appear gray when working in the dark. In addition, the display refresh rate is only 60 Hz – at the level of budget models.
The speaker system of the monitor received special attention – and its ratings turned out to be much higher than those of the screen. The reviewers called the excellent sound of the speakers with support for Dolby Atmos technology the main advantage of the device. The quality of the built-in microphones was also noted, which do a good job of noise reduction in video mode.
Much less “lucky” 12-megapixel webcam with f / 2.4 aperture. Despite working in conjunction with a dedicated A13 Bionic chip, during testing, it displayed a picture with a lot of noise, and also distorted the texture of the skin. The effect was the same when using different software (FaceTime, Zoom, Photo Booth and QuickTime), and is presumably programmatic. Apple is expected to fix the problem with the next software update.
According to The Verge journalist , it is worth paying attention to the monitor if high resolution is critical for work. For the rest of the indicators, it loses to many much more affordable solutions from other brands with macOS support.
