The world’s largest gathering, Mahakumbh, has started from Monday. Despite dense fog, severe cold and freezing water, on the first day 1.5 crore people took a dip in the Sangam to attain salvation. It is believed that bathing in Triveni washes away all sins. Spirituality, astrology, culture, religion, tradition and modern technology… the confluence of all these along with Ganga, Yamuna and invisible Saraswati is being seen in Prayagraj.

More than 40 crore people are expected to visit this fair, which is being organized after 12 years, for 45 days, including lakhs of foreigners. Apart from this, the saints claim that this Mahakumbh is being organized after 144 years in a special coincidence which has made it even more auspicious for the devotees. This is the reason why there is a huge crowd of people in this Mahakumbh of Prayagraj.

America’s Michael becomes ‘Baba Mokshpuri’

Michael Juna, a former US Army soldier turned monk, has joined the Akhara and is now known as ‘Baba Mokshpuri’. Describing his journey of transformation, he said, ‘I was an ordinary person, who had a family and a career. But I realized that nothing is permanent in life, so I started searching for salvation. This is my first Mahakumbh in Prayagraj. The spiritual energy here is extraordinary.

A Brazilian devotee said, ‘I practice yoga in Brazil. I have come here in search of ‘moksha’. This is very special… once in 144 years. Sanatan Dharma is the mission of my life and it changed my life. It changed the way I saw the world and my family. Jai Shri Ram’.

Julie from Spain was also included in the crowd of the fair. She said, ‘I feel grateful for this opportunity to take a dip in the holy river at this holy place. I am filled with joy. In his message regarding Mahakumbh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X that Mahakumbh brings together countless people in the sacred confluence of faith, devotion and culture. He said, ‘Maha Kumbh is a symbol of India’s timeless spiritual heritage and a celebration of faith and harmony.’

Administration ‘found’ 250 ‘lost’ people

A group of women from Siddharth Nagar, Uttar Pradesh were busy singing bhajans and folk songs and a team of YouTubers from South Korea present there were capturing various scenes of the Mahakumbh. A team from Japan was also present there. Teams from different states of India were also seen at various ghats of Prayagraj. Hailing the arrangements made for the pilgrims, Kailash Narayan Shukla of Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh said, ‘Very good arrangements were made for the pilgrims and we did not face any problem in taking the holy bath.’

Due to the huge crowd, many people got separated from their families. This news refreshed the memories of Hindi films made on the separation of brothers and sisters during the Kumbh Mela. However, now times have changed. The Uttar Pradesh government has taken several crowd-control initiatives, including ‘Bhula-Bhatka’ camps, police support centers and deployment of personnel at specially constructed watch towers. Officials said that within a few hours more than 250 people were ‘lost’ but thanks to the efforts of the administration, they were ‘found’.

Ajay Goyal, a pilgrim from Delhi, was separated from his family for about an hour. Sharing his experience, he said, ‘Just before parting, we had jokingly said that this often happens in the Kumbh Mela in old Bollywood films. Luckily we met again in the same fair. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, while sharing the data on Twitter, said in a post, ‘Today, on the first bathing festival, 1.50 crore Sanatan devotees got the virtuous benefit of bathing in Aviral-Nirmal Triveni.’

CM Yogi had said that ‘Maha Kumbh Nagar is the largest temporary city in the world, where 50 lakh to 1 crore devotees can come at any time. According to Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, ‘More than 55 police stations have been created for the fair and 45,000 policemen are being deployed. 30 pontoon bridges have also been prepared in the Sangam area and Phaphamau, so that people can easily travel from one end of the Sangam to the other. Prayagraj District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mander said that area-wise ghats have been built for bathing. The first Shahi Snan will take place on Tuesday, Makar Sankranti, when the number of people taking a dip in the Sangam is expected to increase further. The last bath will take place on Mahashivratri on 26th February.

Historical importance of Maha Kumbh Mela

According to belief, the Maha Kumbh Mela is considered to be related to the churning of the ocean. According to the story, once Indra and other gods became weak due to the curse of sage Durvasa. Taking advantage of this, the demons attacked the gods and the gods were defeated in this war. Then all the gods together went to Lord Vishnu for help and told him the whole story. Lord Vishnu along with the demons advised him to churn the ocean and extract nectar from there.

When the pot of nectar emerged from the churning of the ocean, Lord Indra’s son Jayanta flew into the sky carrying it. Seeing all this, the demons also ran after Jayant to take the nectar pot and after a lot of efforts, the demons got the pot of nectar in their hands. After this, there was a war between the gods and demons for 12 days to establish their control over the Amrit Kalash. During Samudra Manthan, some drops of Amrit Kalash fell in Haridwar, Ujjain, Prayagraj and Nashik, hence Maha Kumbh Mela is organized at these four places.
