A comic post on the official Twitter page of the McDonald’s fast food restaurant chain led to the emergence of a new cryptocurrency. At the same time, its rate very quickly increased by more than 2800 times.
It all started with the fact that the founder of Tesla and SpaceX Elon Musk wrote the following a few days ago: “I’ll eat the Happy Meal on camera if McDonald’s starts accepting Dogecoin.” In response to this, McDonald’s stated the following: “Only if Tesla starts accepting Grimacecoin.”
After that, several Grimacecoin cryptocurrencies appeared on the Binance Smart Chain network at once. The rate of one of them soared from $0.0007 to $2 within a few hours, after which it dropped to $0.60. The value of another coin, Grimacecoin, created on the Ethereum network, rose by 56,000% to $0.004074. More than 1,200 people have bought the coin, and its market capitalization has reached $6 million.
The Grimace character from the McDonald’s universe has appeared in fast food marketing campaigns since the 70s. This character was conceived as an anti-hero who steals milkshakes from children. But back in 2012, McDonald’s creative director Roy Bergold, in an interview with QSR, called the idea a failure and the character too scary for kids.
