Komaki says that LiFePO4 batteries contain iron which makes them safe in extreme temperatures. These batteries also have fewer cells (about a third) that reduce the cumulative heat generated directly inside the battery pack. Compared to regular batteries, new ferro phosphate batteries have a longer cycle life of 2,500-3,000 charge cycles which makes them more resourceful. According to the company, these batteries have been claimed to give a range of more than 300 km on a single charge.
Komaki further said that an ‘active balancing mechanism’ has also been developed for the battery. As the name suggests, this mechanism actively balances the battery cells at certain times. However, the company has not clarified how this process works.
Apart from launching the new batteries, the company has also introduced an app-based service to facilitate real-time data to the customers. Apart from this, the company has also released an update for the Hardware Battery Management System (BMS), which now reads and updates the battery status every second.
Gunjan Malhotra, Director, Komaki Electric Division, said, “This success will establish Komaki as a trusted brand in the market. We have developed an easy-to-use mobile application that will inform end users and dealers about battery health. It will also allow Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to perform battery repairs from a central location. This will avoid unnecessary charging and discharging of the batteries thereby preventing damage to the battery.”
Let us tell you that earlier this year, there were cases of fire in electric scooters of many companies including Ola Electric, Okinawa, Pure EV, Jitendra Electric. A government committee was formed to investigate the cases of fire in electric scooters. The committee, in its report, had said that the battery module of the electric scooters that caught fire was faulty and a better battery management system was not being provided in these scooters.
After a rebuke from the government, these companies have recalled thousands of their defective electric scooters from the market. Summoning these companies, the government has also issued a ‘show cause’ notice.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has now issued new performance standards for lithium-ion batteries for the safety of consumers amid rising fire incidents in electric vehicles in the country. Batteries shall be tested separately to check their reliability, charging capacity, ability to operate in different environments and temperatures. The new standards also inform the procedure for testing lithium-ion batteries.
