Electric Buses: 50,000 electric buses to be launched in 25 states of the country by 2030

Under the Grand Challenge, CESL has started the process of deploying 5,450 e-buses in five cities – Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Surat. The electric buses to be procured on tender based on the gross cost contract model will be 27 per cent and 23 per cent cheaper than diesel and CNG buses respectively.

Government think-tank, NITI Aayog has directed CESL to expand the scope of the Grand Challenge and develop the demand for 50,000 e-buses over the next seven years. CESL will prepare the data of old buses in these five states, after which the old buses will be replaced by electric buses in a phased manner.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has requested CESL to prepare a program to scrap over 30,000 old buses in 25 states. The Grand Challenge is the world’s largest tender for procurement of e-buses, the statement said. In this, the demand for e-buses will be met equally in five cities.

The demand for electric vehicles is increasing rapidly in the country

Sales of electric vehicles in India are growing rapidly and a network of charging stations is also being developed for this. According to the vehicle portal of the Union Ministry of Transport, more than 10.60 lakh electric vehicles have been registered in the country. At the same time, a total of 1,742 charging stations are operational in different states of the country.

The sale of electric vehicles in the country has tripled. If we look at the data, in the financial year 2021-22, the total electric vehicle sales were 4,29,217 units, while during the financial year 2020-21 it was 1,34,821 units. At the same time, in the financial year 2019-20, the total sales of electric vehicles were 1,68,300 units.

According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the retail sales of electric cars during the last fiscal stood at 17,802 units, which was more than three times the sales of 4,984 units in the financial year 2020-2021. Retail sales of electric two-wheelers stood at 2,31,338 units in the last financial year, which is five times higher than 41,046 units sold in the financial year 2020-21.

FADA noted that sales of EVs grew to 2,203 units in the last fiscal, as against just 400 units in the financial year 2020-21.
