Multi-brand automotive company Stellantis has joined hands with US startup Archer Aviation to manufacture electric aircraft.
Both these companies will start making electric airplanes from the year 2024. The airplane made by both the companies will be able to fly with a weight of 445 kg. It will be able to fly with 5 people including the pilot and will cover a distance of 160 kilometers once charged.
According to the agreement between the two companies, Stellantis will transfer its manufacturing expertise to Archer to produce the Midnight Electrically Powered Vertical Takeoff (eVTOL) aircraft. With its help, Archer will accelerate the commercial manufacturing of this aircraft. Not only this, Stellantis will also provide experienced personnel. This will save Archer a lot of money. Along with this, Stellantis will also give 150 million dollars to Archer.
Construction will start next year
Stellantis will work with Archer to build a manufacturing facility in Covington, Georgia. Both companies plan to start production of the Midnight Aircraft in 2024. Although the range of this electric airplane made by both the companies is 160 kilometers, but it will be optimized for short distance flights of up to 32 kilometers. During a stopover, only about 10 minutes of time will be sufficient to recharge the battery.
Both the companies aim to innovate in urban air mobility. That is why both the companies want to bring the new air mobility vehicle to the market as soon as possible by fully exploiting their capabilities. While Archer will work on technology such as electric propulsion for eVTOLs, Stellantis will use its manufacturing techniques and expertise to mass-produce the electric airplane. The strategic collaboration between Archer and Stellantis has been ongoing since 2020. Stellantis also invested in Archer in 2021.
Beta Technologies is also making electric aircraft
Another company Beta Technologies is also involved in making electric airplanes. The company has made a plane named ALIA. It looks like a drone. This aircraft has the capacity to carry 1,400 pounds of cargo or 6 people simultaneously. The plane is the brainchild of ALIA Sirius XM founder Martin Rothblatt and Harvard-educated engineer Kyle Clark.
