The shocking thing for everyone is that in this post, the price of the battery of Tata Nexon EV is being told at Rs 7 lakh. But the owner of this Tata Nexon EV has been fortunate enough to have the car’s battery covered under warranty and the owner has got it replaced free of cost.
EV battery pack price in India is very high
The battery is one of the most expensive components in an EV and optimum performance is mostly based on the battery health of the vehicle. Recently, an owner who has driven his Tata Nexon EV for almost two years with 68,000 kms on this post odometer, faced the problem of battery failure.
The owner of this Nexon EV had filed a complaint about the problem of stopping the vehicle even at low range and 15 percent charge. Tata Motors currently offers 8 years or 1.6 lakh km warranty on the battery pack of the Tata Nexon EV and this helped the owner to get the battery replaced free of cost.
The owner has claimed in the post that it will cost around Rs 7 lakh when the warranty expires. While the price of the battery pack quoted by the owner on this post was not confirmed by the company, to many the price appears to be astronomical.
Although there is also a detailed and logical explanation for this cost. Batteries for electric vehicles are still in their early stages and the technology is not yet mature. Like most parts of technology at this stage, manufacturing electric vehicle batteries is also quite expensive.
The economies of scale have brought down the cost to a great extent and battery packs now cost between Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 per kWh in India. Keeping this in mind, the battery pack of the Tata Nexon EV, which is 30.3kWh, will cost around Rs 6.06 lakh.
The remaining amount can be considered as a safe profit margin by the manufacturer. The profit margin here is 13 per cent, which may seem like a lot at first, but the logistics, taxation on spare parts and extreme sensitivity of the item can all be factored in for the high price.
